Ginger Plant

£17.00 exc delivery

These tasty tubers are used in all kinds of asian cooking and also make a great houseplant. Grown from tubers in our own nursery these fascinating Zingiber officinale plants are already 2-3 feet high with several shoots per plant.

Beneath the foliage the edible root system is developing nicely now and they should be potted up on arrival to ensure the roots can continue to grow. Used fresh, ginger root is much stronger and juicier and of course some of the root can be stored for replanting in the spring.

Looking after your Ginger Plant
These instructions are sent with the plant gift
Ginger (Zingiber Officinale) is a tropical plant which grows in shaded swamps, so try to ensure they are kept warm and out of direct sunlight in the home.
Your plant already has a sizeable root system however for the best crop we would recommend allowing them a further growing season and then harvesting the crop next autumn. You can do this in two ways. You can either either pop the plant outside until the cold kills the foliage off with the first frosts and the entire root ball can be harvested and dried and used as required in cooking. Or alternatively you can split the plant by hand or with a sharp knife, drying a portion of the root and repotting the mother plant for a further crop the following year.
Brown tips to the leaves are a sign that your plant either is getting too much sunlight or is not receiving enough water. You can snip the ends of the leaves off to keep it looking tidy but try a more shaded spot and misting the leaves.
At the end of the season you should expect your plant to die back but it should start to reshoot again as soon as the days get longer again in the spring.
