This tropical banana plant is surprisingly easy to grow and looks fantastic in any room, or even on the patio. These funky fast growing plants are a great alternative to the flowery options and as they tolerate low light they make great office plants.
These banana plants are a dwarf variety 'musa valutina' and under the right conditions will eventually produce small edible bananas. Our banana plants have been loving the summer sunshine and have grown almost a foot in the last month. They are now looking particularly lush and bushy as pictured and are growing on nicely at over 90cm tall

Banana Plant
Musa basjoo
Otherwise known as Japanese Hardy Banana
Fruit is small and decorative, not for eating.
Banana trees are attractive indoor plants when young, and just need warmth and water and light. They will do well in a light room or a frost-free conservatory. This variety is suitable for a sheltered spot outside just protect the trunk from severe frosts
Did you know commercial bananas do not have seeds? The sweet yellow bananas we know and love are a mutant strain of the red and green cooking bananas or plantains common throughout africa and asia.
Season: Jan to Dec
To encourage growth and eventually fruit, keep in warm light room or conservatory, repot regularly and water well. Plants will need to grow to at least 6 foot before they will fruit. To control growth keep your plant cooler and restrict it's pot size

The dwarf banana (musa) is easy to grow indoors, or outdoors in a sheltered spot. This variety is Musa Basjoo or ‘Japanese Hardy Banana’ and will be quite happy in a bright room, on a sunny patio or sheltered spot in the garden. If encouraged in a bright enough spot this plant could grow to six feet or even more. It is mainly grown for it’s foliage but under the right conditions you could be lucky and produce flowers and even ornamental bananas.
The tropical plant does need plenty of light, but try to avoid direct sunlight which will scorch the young leaves.
As the plant grows it can be repotted in a larger pot. Choose rich compost that will hold water well. You might like to treat your plant to a liquid feed if you want to encourage it to grow. To restrict growth however, keep slightly cooler and darker and restrict pot size. Although this is a semi-hardy variety, if outside, it is best to provide some frost protection, particularly during the first winter.
Problem Solving: Banana plants are tough fast growing plants that survive well indoors or out, most problems are due to under watering. Drooping leaves - is the first sign of underwatering and can be remedied with an immediate and thorough soaking. Brown tips to leaves - are usually the result of either scorching or extreme cold. Remove any marked leaves from the bottom of the plant, to help encourage new growth from the top and try to protect your plant from extremes of temperature. Split leaves - are the result of constant movement, either being brushed by passers by or buffeted by strong wind. Split leaves will not damage the plant but can look untidy so try to keep your plant away from main thoroughfares. Yellowing bottom leaves - over time the older leaves will start to wither away and turn yellow from the bottom, this is a natural process and nothing to worry about. Remove these to allow new growth to form from the centre.
