Kumquat Tree

Kumquats are a fantastic exotic fruit and these attractive trees are surprisingly easy to look after. The sweetness of the kumquat fruit comes from the rind and so they are normally eaten whole either fresh from the tree or in desserts.

Additional Information about this plant...
Kumquat
Fortunella japonica/margarita
The latin name of this citrus plant was given to it by the British plant collector Robert Fortune who discovered the plant in China in 1847 and brought it back to Europe
Small white scented flowers
Kumquats are small orange fruit with edible peel
The Kumquats growth is slower than that of other citrus plants so it is well suited to growing in pots. Like all citrus plants it is happiest in a light cool room.
Season: Jan to Nov
Great raw, in fruit salads or as a marmalade. The fruit is eaten with the peel intact and the sweet peel provides an interesting contrast to the slightly bitter fruit flesh.
How to Look After our Plants
Looking after your Kumquat
These instructions are sent with the plant gift
This little citrus tree has both decorative fruit and fragrant flowers – sometimes both at once. . It is a kumquat – or fortunella margarita, and it bears sweet scented white flowers and distinctive orange fruit. It can bring pleasure for months, or even years, with the right care
Like all citrus trees, this plant loves light. Near a window in a bright cool room or conservatory is best. Try to keep your plant away from any radiators or cold draughts which may shock your plant. A cool room is fine, but a draughty porch or a frosty conservatory is not. If it gets below 5ºC it will suffer.
In the heat of summer your plant will appreciate a holiday. Put it outside on a sheltered patio and it will enjoy the fresh air. Bring it back inside when there is a nip in the evening air.
Don’t worry if the soil feels dry on top - the most common cause of problems is watering too frequently in the winter months when the plant is resting. For more information visit http://4presents.co.uk/citrus.aspx
The fruit and the peel are both edible raw, the more sunlight they receive the sweeter they will grow. When cooked they add a wonderful flavour to game and fish dishes.
