Pick-a-toms will thrive best on a sunny windowsill or sheltered patio and make a great project for kids. We expect to have tomato plants available again in the summer. In the meantime we do still have lots of other tasty plants looking good as part of the 'other edible plant gifts' selection from the left hand menu

The 'Pick-aTom' variety is a heavy-cropping compact tomato that will be happy in a pot on the windowsill or patio.
Tomatoes, like potatoes, belong to the Solanaceae family and were brought to this country from South America.
Season: May to Sep
They are now one of Europe's favourite 'vegetable' - although they are actually a fruit!

These tomato plants have been grown in a greenhouse to bring them into fruit early. They have recently been repotted and will do grow well but in a controlled manner in this size pot. However if you would like to encourage your plant to continue to grow the bigger the pot the larger the plant and eventually the crop of tomatoes, so for a bumper harvest you may wish to repot your plant into a larger pot or growbag in a couple of weeks time and stake your plant to some good stiff canes as it grows.
Tomato plants love sunlight and will be happiest on a sunny window sill, in a conservatory or outside. Give them as much direct sunlight as possible, but if you put them outside make sure they are in a sheltered spot and not exposed to cold winds. The ideal temperature is 15-20 degrees centigrade.
With the right care these plants will treat you with fruit for up to six weeks. These are annual plants and will only last one season.
Tomatoes that are allowed to ripen on the plant to a bright red will have the best flavour but green tomatoes can be used in chutneys or placed on a windowsill to ripen. These plants are grown to soil
