How to Look After our Plants
Looking after your Streptocarpus
These instructions are sent with the plant gift
This plant is tough. It is a houseplant for people who don’t necessarily have ‘green thumbs’. Just give it the right location and follow some simple rules.
To make sure you get blooms all summer give your Streptocarpus plenty of light. They do well in almost any window of the house and also benefit from artificial light. Try to keep your plant at the sort of summer indoor temperatures that suit you. However these plants are not nearly as fussy as many house plants and will tolerate quite a wide range of conditions.
The plant continually replaces both leaves and flowers during the summer, and it is quite normal for leaves to age, and flowers to get brown edges as they fade. As the flowers fade pinch out the dead blossoms to encourage growth and make the plant look tidy. As the outer leaves get old and discoloured just cut them off – the plant will continue to flower from the centre. To encourage your plants to flower again next year, divide your plants at the end of the summer into two larger pots using free-draining compost.
If your plant has suffered on its journey don’t worry, it will recover. Just cut out any untidy leaves or flowers and your plant will produce new growth from the centre. If the outer leaves are drooping give the pot a good watering but let the water drain away so that it is not standing in water.
