Fig Tree

This mediterranean fig tree is a great and easy care bush that can either be planted outside or kept in a cool light spot indoors. The smaller of our two sizes, these hardy 'bonholm' figs will eventually grow into 2-3m fig trees in a sheltered spot, producing a bumper crop of figs each year.

'Bonholm' is a dutch variety that ripens early and does particularly well in the UK. This weeks fig trees are looking really nice and bushy and very similar to pictured. They are supported by a triangle of canes whilst they are young but are already developing young fruit buds and will grow on well producing tasty fresh figs each summer.

Fig Tree
Ficus carica
Figs are a delicious fruit cultivated in Europe and the east for centuries, Adam and Eve are often portrayed with fig leaves preserving their dignity.
Fig trees can grow to full size trees in the UK in a sunny sheltered spot, producing attractive foliage as well as crops of sweet figs. They do not need much fertilization and will produce most fruit in poor soil with constricted roots, making them great container plants.
Season: Jun to Aug
How to Look After our Plants
Looking after your Dwarf Fig Tree
These instructions are sent with the plant gift
This dwarf fig tree (Ficus carica) is a Mediterranean plant that grows into a full size tree. You can grow it inside or you can grow it outside in a sheltered spot.
Inside or out, make sure the plant has plenty of light so that the fruits will ripen. The fig tree is relatively hardy, and will withstand some frost as long as the plant is sturdy. Avoid cold winds. Figs do best in poor soil – if the soil is too rich they will produce leaves rather than fruit.
When it starts to outgrow the pot replant in a bigger one – a mixture of soil and compost is ideal. In summer it will appreciate a holiday outside on a sheltered patio or balcony.
The plant is deciduous so don’t be alarmed if it drops its leaves over the winter.
