Looking after your Moth Orchid
These instructions are sent with the plant gift
The “Moth Orchid” or Phalaenopsis is particularly popular because it likes the same conditions as we all do – a nice snug home, not too close to a heater, but away from draughts. They are quite easy to look after if you understand their natural habitat, and will bring you joy for many, many weeks.
These are plants of the forest – they like some light, but don’t like to be scorched. Avoid a window sill where there is constant direct sunlight. Although quite content in warm rooms, the cooler the room (within reason) the longer the flowers will last.
Once your orchid has finally finished blooming cut the flower stems right back and find a nice out of the way spot with an even temperature for them to rest. With a bit of luck they can reflower again next year.
Hot tip – try putting a damp rag or sponge underneath the pot and within the pot holder. This keeps the roots moist while letting them breathe.

Moth Orchid
Phalaenopsis
Pronounced FAL-A-nop-sis, the latin name means "resembling a moth". Early collectors thought the light flowers in the gloom of the forest looked like clouds of moths.
Variety of different shades in pink, white and yellow
The easiest to care for of all the orchids, phaleanopsis can flower for several weeks and even months. The cooler the room the longer the blooms will last although they will cope with central heating much better than other orchids. Orchids are sensitive to ethylene gas
Season: Jan to Dec
Orchids are also rumoured to have aphrodisiac properties and in ancient times were an important ingredient in love potions.
