Plants4Presents celebrate Silver at RHS Hampton
Emily and Isobel were delighted to be awarded a prestigious silver medal for their Grow Your Own Curry Display at the RHS hampton court palace flower show 2013
The judges particularly praised the original nature of the theme and the quality of the plants on show.

Emily was also running talks throughout the week in the growing tastes marquee on growing and cooking with these curry ingredients at home and will be posting more recipes and top tips on her blog at www.growyourowncurry.co.uk over the summer.

Plants4Presents launch new Grow Your Own Curry blog in the run up to the RHS
Hampton Court Flower Show
Online shop Plants4Presents are excited to launch a new behind the scenes blog as
they gear up for their Grow Your Own Curry Display at Hampton Court. The display
will be nearly nine months in the making and will include a healthy mix of chilli
plants mixed with more exotic and unusual spices. The blog
www.growyourowncurry.co.uk includes regular updates on what it takes to
put together a show like this and helpful GYO factsheets to grow these ingredients
at home. From ginger and turmeric to lemongrass and curry leaves there is something
to tickle everyone’s tastebuds as well as a host of easy recipes to use the
With Curry still the nation’s favourite dish and unusual edible plants featuring
prominently in the coverage of Chelsea flower show this week, this display is sure
to be a crowd pleaser at the RHS show in July. Chillies including Scotch Bonnet
and Friars Hats will form a central part of the display but also more exotic herbs
and spices, ginger, turmeric, cardamom, lemongrass and the curry leaf (murraya koengii)
“Planning for 2012 started for us as soon as we got back from Hampton court
last year with the planting starting in earnest from the beginning of January”
explains Emily Rae “We grow 3 times as many plants as needed for each display
to allow for losses and selection of the best plants and it’s a nerve racking
business feeding up and coddling the tropical rhizomes over the winter months to
get them big enough for the displays in July.”
The idea for the ‘Grow your own Curry’ theme was put forward by Lee
one of Plants4Presents nursery managers who is a big curry fan! Plants4Presents
have been growing chillies, kaffir limes, ginger, turmeric and herbs and selling
them as gifts for many years and will be showcasing Cardamom and Curry Leaf plants
for the first time this season. Because it’s such a big project everyone in
the nursery gets involved from sowing the seeds and rhizomes to painting the plant
troughs and weaving the living willow structures. Even before the onsite build begins
the Plants4Presents team will have racked a couple of hundred man (and woman!) hours
in the nursery in growing the display plants and of course the plants for sale.
Hampton Court Flower Show takes place from the 2nd to 8th July and is officially
the largest flower show in Europe. Plants4Presents will be exhibiting in both the
plant village (stand TH6) and the edible tastes marquee (stand GYO8) and staff will
be on hand all week to answer any questions.
Plants4Presents are celebrating Mother’s everywhere with complimentary G&Ts

Official Reservoir Opening by Norman Baker MP
Norman Baker opens Fletching Glasshouses Reservoir
This ambitious project to collect rainwater from the 2 acre green houses was officially
opened by Norman Baker MP on Friday. The sun shone and after so many weeks of drought
it was a timely reminder of how important this kind of water recycling is. The day
went really well with a great turnout from local growers, and members of Transition
Town Lewes. Norman commented “It’s a very good initiative today and
I’m very happy to be here along with Meg Stroude, County Councillor to give
official endorsement and congratulations to all those involved.”
Tours of the working nursery were very well attended with special thanks to Toppers
Teas for providing Sussex blended tea throughout the afternoon. Fletching Glasshouses
nursery is home to Fletching Glasshouses Organic Produce and Plants4Presents.co.uk
(online plant gifts). Growing under glass does use a lot of water and now the site
is in full production the glasshouses use a staggering 8000 cubic metres of mains
water a year making this kind of rainwater harvesting project an obviously sustainable
Last year Fletching glasshouses were awarded an RDPE grant via SEEDA for this project
and have spent the last few months installing a completely new system of pipes,
drainage channels, pumps, filters and an 800m3 reservoir. As the demand for water
in the heat of summer tends to exceed the rainfall the reservoir won’t completely
free the business from mains water but it will have a dramatic impact on water usage.
Isobel Rae, Director and Project Leader is delighted at the way the project has
gone “By making use of the water run off from the greenhouses to water our
crops we expect to reduce our mains usage by 60-70%”.
Not only is this kind of rainwater recycling much more environmentally friendly
and sustainable but the nursery also expects to see significant benefits from the
switch away from treated water. Rainwater is less chlorinated than mains water and
the lower levels of salts and calcium help plants absorb nutrients better and grow
stronger and more resilient to pest attack. Other nurseries that have already implemented
rainwater harvesting (including Lowaters near Southampton) are already reporting
these benefits and across the industry there is a growing move towards this kind
of water harvesting.
