These purple leaved elderflower or elderberries are a more ornamental version of the native elderflower and are easy going shrubs that will produce sweet scented flowers in Spring followed by tasty tart berries in mid-summer.
Native to this country, elderflowers like a damp spot either partially shaded or in full sun. Like its wild cousin, this black elderberry does not need a lot of attention once it is planted out and watered in. In the autumn their leaves will turn an attractive red colour before they drop for winter but don’t worry they are really hardy plants and they will burst back into life next spring.
Harvest the vitamin C rich berries for jams and preserves in the summer or pick the flowers to make your own elderflower champagne or cordial
Problem solving: Outside make sure they are kept well watered in their first year, especially just after planting as they are establishing their new roots.
