  • NEW for 2026 Myrtle bushes symbolise romantic love
  • Great gifts for anniversaries, weddings, or just to say 'thinking of you"

Myrtus communis or the common myrtle is a lovely evergreen garden plant with white flowers in summer and dark purple edible berries in winter.

Greek mythology was the first to associate the myrtle flower with Venus and romantic love but across the centuries it has been a traditional flower in bridal bouquets and flower crowns. In fact the late Queen Elizabeth carried myrtle in her bridal bouquet and it was used in her funeral flowers.

Great gifts for weddings, civil partnerships or to celebrate an anniversary, they are such easy going plants they are great way to send a token of love at any time of year.

Plant them in a sheltered spot in the garden and enjoy the fragrant foliage all year round. The berries are not normally eaten raw but can be made into interesting jams and even liqueur!

Currently looking nice and bushy with plenty of new growth as pictured, we expect these fragrant bushes to start to flower in the Spring.

Myrtle (Myrtus communis) are outdoor plants, native to Southern Europe, Asia and Africa producing pretty white flowers through summer and autumn.

Myrtle are an evergreen semi hardy outdoor shrub that will tolerate tempretures down to -5 to -10 degrees Celcius. They will do well in most parts of the UK. A south or west facing spot in the garden where the soil does not get waterlogged and has a little protection from cold winds would be ideal.

You can keep your Myrtle in the pot for a while, but they will need potting on or planting out within a few months. Keep your Myrtle well watered, especally for the first year whilst it settles new roots into the ground, the compost should feel slightly damp to touch. They are not too fussy about soil type and not to greedy so a general all purpose fertiliser suitable for flowering shrubs given a few times a year will be enough to keep them in good health.

Over time your evergreen Myrtle can grow into quite substantial bushes within 20 years they could reach 2 - 4 meters high and 1.5 - 2.5 meters wide. Because they have neat folaige they also make a lovely option as a flowering hedge or topiary.

Problem solving:

If your plant seems to be suffering from yellowing leaves and leaf drop, try moving your plant to a area in the garden that does not get waterlogged. Crunchy leaves and brown tips is generall the plant not getting enough water.
