These hardy plumbago (ceratostigma willmottianum 'Forest Blue') will provide colourful ground cover in a sunny bed at a time of year when many other plants have finished flowering. They produce pretty indigo blue flowers from July to November and are bee magnets. The foliage also turns a dark red in the autumn which contrasts beautifully with the flowers and adds a welcome splash of colour.

These easy-going perennials are happiest in a sunny garden where they will provide some welcome late colour with vibrant clusters of blue flowers from August to October.

Your Plumbago will do best planted out in a sunny, sheltered spot in the garden, however can be kept in a container on a patio for a while if you prefer. They can tolerate light shade but will flower best in full sun.

When planting out, dig a nice big hole and add some compost or well-rotted manure to help your plant settle in. Keep you plant well-watered whilst it is establishing or whilst in a pot but once it’s settled it won’t need a lot of extra watering. Your Plumbago will naturally die back in the autumn but leave them in place and they will reward you with fresh growth in thespring ready for a lovely display in late summer.

Problem solving:

These plants are hardy in most areas of the UK right down to -15°C however in particularly cold weather, your plant’s stems can be damaged by the frost. If you notice this, prune any frost damaged stems back to ground level.
