Care Instrictions

These instructions are sent with the plant gift

Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) originates from Southeast Asia, but it is a versatile, hardy plant that can be grown almost anywhere.

Liquorice are easy care garden plants that produce pretty lilac flowers and have attractive foliage throughout the summer. They take at least 4 years to get large enough to harvest some of the tasty roots (which, when established, can be harvested after the rest of the plant has died back in the winter), but in the mean time make very ornamental plants for the garden.

Ideally you need to plant your liquorice in fertile, fast draining soil in the garden. They like to be kept slightly damp, especially for the first year when settling into the ground.

They are sun worshippers, so place in a bright spot, ideally south or west facing. Liquorice are woody perennial plants that grow up to 1.5 meters tall and wide, and loose their foliage for the winter months.

Problem solving:

Liquorice are easy going and are generally pest and disease resistant, but do give them enough room for extra air flow around the plant and to avoid powdery mildew.
