Hellebores are sometimes called the Christmas rose as they provide their pretty flowers around December time. These are a classic white variety with bright white blooms and attractive winter foliage.
Great for smaller or courtyard gardens, these young hellebores will provide pretty winter flowers for weeks on end. Keep these plants in a pot on a patio or even in a cold room whilst they are in flower and then plant them out in the garden in the spring for a repeat display next year.

Hellebores are also known as ‘The Christmas Rose’ as they flower around Christmas. This variety can be enjoyed indoors over the festive period, and then outside in a pot on a doorstep or patio or planted directly in the ground.
Over the festive period, this Hellebore will be happy indoors for a few weeks. While the plant is indoors, keep it as cool as you can and make sure there is plenty of natural but not direct sunlight. An East or West facing window is ideal and on a table top in a bright room.
Keep your Hellebore well watered, the compost should feel damp to the touch.
When ready to put outside, choose a spot out of direct sunlight where you can enjoy the winter flowers. You will probably find our winter rain provides plenty of water but if we do have a dry spell give your hellebore a drink – you are always aiming to keep the soil damp.
After flowering your Hellebore can be re-potted in a larger pot with suitable compost and put outside on a patio or balcony or it can be planted out in the garden in the spring. Hellebores like semi shade and a damp but well drained spot and often work well in the shade of larger shrubs or trees. Over time your hellebore can grow into a sizeable bush producing pretty flowers in the depths of winter. Once established they are very hardy and will continue to flower even when snow is on the ground.
Problem solving:
Old foliage and spent flowers should be removed to keep the plant healthy, especially indoors and in a pot. Don’t be surprised if your plant doesn’t look too bushy in the summer months when it is resting – it will soon come back with more growth and flowers next autumn.
