Gaura are sometimes known as whirling butterflies because of the way their flowers move in the breeze. A semi-evergreen variety, they will flower from June right through until the first frosts. They have a compact habit and will be happiest in full sun so are perfect for a patio or balcony.
Current Description
A favourite of the team here, Gaura make a pretty addition to a border providing colour all summer long and well into the autumn. Looking stunning already with masses of pretty pink buds and blooms. They make great plants for the back of the border as they get tall and move around, making the flowers look like pink butterflies fluttering in the breeze.

Sometimes known as whirling butterflies due to the way the flowers move in the wind, these lovely Gaura will produce pretty spikes of flowers from May right up until November.

Originally prairie plants, Gaura are perennials and easy to look after. They will thrive in a sunny border in the garden or in a pot on a patio. They prefer well-drained soil and to be kept just slightly moist but not waterlogged.

Your plant will have all the nutrients it needs for the next month or so but after that if it is in a pot it would benefit from something like a bone meal fertiliser a couple of times during the summer.

They can withstand temperatures down to -5 °C but a mulch will protect them during severe winters.

Cut your plant back hard before it starts to grow again in the spring for a mass of flowers the following summer. It’s worth noting that mature plants won’t like being moved.

Problem solving

Don’t worry if dark spots appear on leaves as this is quite normal. This can be caused by cold weather but will lessen and disappear as the weather starts to warm up in the summer.
