Why Outdoor Gardening is Making a Big Comeback This Spring
A late and dramatic display of spring blooms and blossoms seems to have brought with it a significant surge in gardening enthusiasm this year. Plant businesses and garden centres have noticed a dramatic spike in sales, and at Plants4Presents we’ve noticed a marked preference for outdoor gardening over house plants so far this season.

Outdoor plants are outselling houseplants this spring thanks to the recent balmy temperatures
Factors Fuelling the Resurgence of Gardening
Following the somewhat uneventful spring and summer seasons of 2024, this year’s spring has brought with it some absolutely stunning sunshine! Coupled with the pleasant Easter period we have recently enjoyed, people seem to be particularly inspired to spend more time outdoors this spring, fostering a gardening bloom.
The prolonged, cold, dry winter period has made gardens more accessible earlier in the spring season and the cold weather has held some blooms back resulting in a spectacular bloom of a variety of plants all at once. Daffodils, tulips, hawthorn and cow parsley have all been out at the same time by the roadside and in our gardens reminding us how truly lovely the British garden and countryside can be at this time of year.

The colder start to the year has led to a particularly dramatic display of spring blossom
Weather Patterns and the Implication on Gardening
The Met Office's long-range forecasts for the UK in 2025 suggest that both summer and autumn are likely to experience warmer, drier weather than we are used to. Pollen counts have been noticeably higher this spring too, another indication of this spring flowering peak.
Summer Weather
Late spring into summer is 35% likely to experience hot weather, according to the Met Office. This will likely continue to contribute to this year’s gardening boom, with people taking greater care of their gardens with a view to hosting more barbecues and garden parties with friends and family to make the most of the joyous summer heat.
Autumn Weather
The Met Office have predicted that, even well into autumn, we are likely to enjoy slightly above average temperatures in autumn this year, allowing for pleasant autumn gardening sessions harvesting vegetable patches and indulging in late summer blooms.

Pest Predictions
The major gardening bug-bear in 2024 was the war against slugs and snails, which posed a considerable threat to gardens throughout the duration of last year. On the bright side, the dry winter we have recently exited seems to have helped to limit the population of slugs and snails at least at the start of this year.
However, the drop in slugs and snails may leave the door open this year for a new pest to take centre stage. With the still, warm weather we are predicted to have, our bets are on aphids becoming the peskiest pest of 2025.
