Camellia Plants
Evergreen Camellia plants for gifts and occasions
Originally from the far east, Camellias are a British garden favourite and have been loved by UK gardeners for hundreds of years. Blooming from autumn through the late winter and into the spring, often when little else is flowering, it makes them a symbol of hope, renewal and beauty in colder months. Ideal gifts for patios, borders, and terraces, these outdoor shrubs are prized for their glossy evergreen foliage and wow factor blooms in reds, whites, pinks and creams.
Choose from early flowering Camellia sasanqua and Ackerman varieties or classic winter and spring flowering Camellia japonicas. Or what about a Camellia sinensis tea plant? - part of the Camellia family, tea plants are surprisingly hardy and make fun gifts for tea lovers!
Why choose Camellia plants to send as gifts
Camellias are more than just seasonal flowerers. They’re evergreen treasures that bring structure, colour, and elegance to gardens and containers. Whether you choose Camellia japonica, Camellia sasanqua, or a more unusual variety, each plant offers glossy foliage and striking blooms that will reward.
Camellia Varieties
Originating in the Himalayas, Camellias have been treasured by gardeners and carefully bred over hundreds of years to provide the fabulous range of different coloured flowers, habits and flowering seasons we find today.
Need some help choosing the best variety?
Camellia Japonica
The camellia japonica is known as the common camellia, and provides beautiful, rose like flowers from pure white to deep red.
Camellia japonicas typically bloom late winter to spring, and thrives in partial shade (avoiding hot sun). Like all camellias this variety like their roots damp, so choose a spot that isn’t too free draining and water well in summer if you are keeping in a pot.
Camellia Sasanqua
As an autumn-flowering plant, the camellia sasanqua offers cheer through the dullest days of autumn with small, neat leaves and bright flowers.
The sasanqua variety thrives in similar conditions to the Camellia japonicas, partial shade and a nice damp spot but is more compact so a great choice for smaller gardens or growing in a pot on a patio.
Camellia Ackerman
The camellia ackerman is another great autumn-flowering plant. Bred to flower profusely but with smaller delicate flowers, these are lovely and more unusual variety – great for pots and borders.
Camellia Sinensis
The tea plant, camellia sinensis is an evergreen plant with simple, glossy leaves and beautiful clusters of pure white flowers that bloom from late summer.
This is the same variety that is used commercially to make both black and green tea and once established it can be great fun to have a go and making your own brew from the leaves.
Like all camellias they don’t like alkaline soils but otherwise they are surprisingly easy going and will thrive in a range of soils. Just keep the soil damp, particularly when grown in a pot and choose a position out of direct sunlight.

Care Tips That Help Camellias Thrive
- Planting & positioning: Camellias are easy going, outdoor plants – they do not like to be kept indoors. Find a partial or dappled shaded position in the garden that is sheltered from strong winds and early morning sun.
- Soil & acidity: It is a popular myth that you must only use ericaceous or acid soils for Camellias. Although they prefer slightly ericaceous and acid soils, Camellias will cope well in most soils except chalk and very alkaline conditions. They will be very happy planted in a good container peat-free compost and even garden soil.
- Watering: Camellias kept in pots don’t like to get too dry. Keep soil evenly moist (especially during summer) making sure excess water can freely drain away as waterlogged soil can cause leaf drop.
- Pests: Camellias kept outdoors don’t tend to suffer to much from pests but if you do notice any critters, you can read more on what to do on our plant pest treatment page.
- Container culture: Many camellias do well in pots, and they are usually grateful for a repot in the spring, but you can also report in summer or early autumn, just not the winter.
