Lantana are sun lovers but are super easy going and on a sunny patio they will treble in size over the summer months, producing masses of colourful flower clusters that the bees and butterflies will love. Tropical lantana are not fully hardy so are best kept in a pot and brought into a frost free spot for the winter months

Lantana is a bushy, tropical/subtropical shrub native to central and south America. They have been a popular plant for the UK garden for many years and are known for their particularly long flowering period, and are very popular plants for pollinators, especially the hummingbird hawk moth.

Lantana do best in warm sunny spots, and for the best amount of blooms at least 5 - 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. If keeping your plant in the pot do make sure to water regularly, you’re aiming to let the soil dry out between watering, never let the plant sit in water as this will damage the roots, so always use a planting pot with adequate drainage holes.

During the growing season feed your lantana with a balanced slow release fertiliser granules once or twice a year. They have already been re-potted recently this season but if the roots are starting to grow out the bottom you can pot up again.

Lantana are typically considered annual plants here in the UK, they will die back in winter if left outside. However if you overwinter your plant in a frost free environment it will come back the following year. When the flowering has finished stop watering as often and find a spot that is completely frost free for it to overwinter, then once the frosts are over you can repot it into a bigger pot, give it a water and a feed and pop it back in a bright spot in the garden. Typically they need to be kept above 5 degrees Celsius to overwinter, and little watering through this time as they will not drink very much when dormant.

Problem solving: Brown tips to the leaves are quite common in the autumn and a sign that your plant is entering its dormant period. Summer browning and crinkling of the new leaves is a sign of either scorch or the plant is not getting enough to drink. Yellowing is the opposite so do allow longer time between waterings. Not producing many blooms then you will need to find a brighter spot with more hours of direct sunlight. Watch out for pests, typically aphids, if you find them thoroughly soak the entire plant in soapy water and keep in the shade whilst it dries to avoid scorching it.
